Alt Text Validator

Validate and improve image alt text quality for better web accessibility

Overview

The Alt Text Validator helps you create effective alternative text for images. Evaluate your alt text against best practices, identify common mistakes like generic phrases or excessive length, and get specific recommendations for improvement.

Tips

  1. Describe Content and Function: Focus on what the image shows and why it’s there. For a “search” button icon, use “Search” not “Magnifying glass icon.”

  2. Keep it Under 150 Characters: Screen readers may truncate longer descriptions. For complex images like charts, use a short summary in alt text and provide full details in adjacent text or captions.

  3. Avoid Starting with “Image of”: Screen readers already announce it’s an image. Write “Sunset over mountains” instead of “Image of a sunset over mountains.”

  4. Use Empty Alt for Decorative Images: Purely decorative images should have alt="" to avoid adding noise for screen reader users. Only informative images need descriptive alt text.

  5. Test in Context: Read your page with alt text replacing images. If a blind user would understand the content, your alt text is effective.
