Tip Calculator

In the United States, standard tipping for restaurant service:

• 15% - Adequate service (minimum acceptable)
• 18% - Good service
• 20% - Great service (most common)
• 25%+ - Exceptional service

Tipping customs vary by country. This calculator is designed for US standards.

Traditional: Tip calculated on pre-tax subtotal

Modern practice: Many people tip on total (including tax)

Difference: On a $100 meal with 8% tax, the difference is about $1.60 for a 20% tip

This calculator defaults to tipping on total for simplicity, but you can change this in options.

The calculator divides the total bill (including tip) evenly among all people.

Example: $120 bill, 20% tip ($24), 4 people = $36 per person

Each person pays: (Bill + Tip) ÷ Number of People

For uneven splits (someone ordered more), use the itemized receipt and split accordingly.

• Exceptional service
• Large party or complicated order
• Special requests or accommodations
• Long stay at the table
• Bad weather (for delivery)
• Holidays

• Poor service (distinguish from kitchen issues)
• Rude or inattentive server
• Major service problems

Note: Even for poor service, 10% minimum is common. Consider speaking to a manager about serious issues.

• Delivery: 15-20%, minimum $3-5
• Bars: $1-2 per drink or 15-20% on tab
• Buffet: 10% for drink service and clearing
• Takeout: 10% optional (appreciated for large orders)
• Coffee/Counter: $0.50-1 per drink (optional)

Cash advantages:

• Server receives immediately
• No credit card processing fees
• Full amount goes to server

Card advantages:

• Convenient when not carrying cash
• Creates record
• Usually processed same day
