How JPEG Compression Works
- Color Space Conversion: Images are converted from RGB to YCbCr, separating brightness from color information.
- Block Division: The image is divided into 8x8 pixel blocks for processing.
- DCT (Discrete Cosine Transform): Each block is transformed to frequency domain, concentrating energy in low frequencies.
- Quantization: High-frequency components are reduced or discarded based on quality setting. This is where compression happens.
- Quality Setting: Lower quality uses more aggressive quantization, resulting in smaller files but more visible artifacts.
- Trade-off: JPEG is lossy compression - some image information is permanently lost to achieve smaller file sizes.
