What are Business Days?
Business days (also called working days or weekdays) are days when normal business operations are conducted. Typically, this excludes:
- Weekends (usually Saturday and Sunday)
- Public holidays
- Company-specific non-working days
Example: From Friday to next Monday is only 1 business day (Monday), as Saturday and Sunday are excluded.
Weekend Patterns
Different regions have different weekend patterns:
- Saturday-Sunday: Most common (Americas, Europe, East Asia, Australia)
- Friday-Saturday: Middle East (Saudi Arabia, UAE)
- Other patterns: Can be customized for specific needs
Use the weekend configuration section to match your region or business needs.
Holiday Handling
Holidays are excluded from business day calculations:
- Public holidays that fall on weekdays reduce business days
- Holidays that fall on weekends don't affect the count (already excluded)
- Some countries observe holidays on different days if they fall on weekends
Use the "Load US Federal Holidays" button for a quick start, or add custom holidays manually.
Adding/Subtracting Working Days
This feature helps you find deadlines or start dates:
- Positive number: Finds a date in the future (e.g., deadline 10 business days from now)
- Negative number: Finds a date in the past (e.g., when to start to finish by a date)
Example: If today is Monday and you add 5 business days, you get Monday of next week (skipping the weekend).
Working Hours Calculation
The calculator assumes a standard 8-hour workday:
- Working Hours = Business Days × 8 hours
- Useful for project planning and time tracking
- Adjust mentally if your workday is different (e.g., 7.5 or 9 hours)
Common Use Cases
Project Planning:
- Calculate project duration excluding weekends
- Set realistic deadlines
- Account for holidays in timeline
Legal/Compliance:
- Notice periods (e.g., "30 business days notice")
- Filing deadlines
- Response windows
Business Operations:
- Shipping/delivery estimates
- Processing times
- Payment terms
Tips and Best Practices
- Always clarify whether "days" means calendar or business days
- Keep your holiday list up to date
